TRACES OF THE PAST

Sobibor

This forest colony is located 12 km to the south east of Wlodawa (access by road 816). In 1942 and 1943 there was adeath camp here, in which 250,000 victims were murdered by the Nazis. Since 1993 it has been possible to visit Muzeum Obozu Zaglady (the Death Camp Museum), phone +82 5719867, a branch of the Wlodawa Museum.

The exhibition details the history of the camp. There is also a mound made from the ashes of the victims and a monument with the words "In homage to those murdered by the Nazis".

Memory of the Shoah
Sobibor witnessed one of the few Jewish victories to occur during the Second World War. On 14 October 1943, an uprising took place in the concentration camp, thanks to which 300 prisoners escaped. While some of them perished during the breakout, others managed to reach partisan units (some of which contained refugees from the Wlodawa Ghetto) and took up arms against the occupants.

Fifty escapees survived the war. In 1987 the American director Jack Gold made the film Escape from Sobibor, based on these facts.
