Between Zionism and Assimilation

During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, a great debate was underway about the various ways of being Jewish.

Some Jews advocated a traditional lifestyle, others opted for cultural assimilation while maintaining their own religion; others promoted the creation of a Jewish state in the Middle East.

The range of views and choices is best illustrated by the biographies of specific individuals.

Included here are several examples of Jews from Poland whose lives took them in completely different directions. These biographies demonstrate the great variety of social and political visions that existed, as well as Jews' cultural coexistence with old Europe.
