Scholars
We would like to devote a separate section
here to the outstanding Polish-Jewish scholars who have made such a
significant contribution to both Polish and international learning.
Bearing in mind the "bench ghettos" (getta lawkowe), one should also
remember that it is precisely in scholarly pursuits that certain
barriers are broken quite quickly.

The Jewish contribution to European
learning most often calls to mind the achievements of the Middle Ages,
when, along with the Arabs, it was the Jews who preserved for Europe its
own heritage'the works of the great Greek philosophers. During the
second half of the nineteenth century and the first half of the
twentieth, one can readily see how great the Jewish contribution to
scholarship was, which was also related to the process of assimilation
and influence of the Jewish Enlightenment. Albert Einstein is most often
cited as an example of a Jewish scientist in this context. Here, we
will include those who were tied with Poland and Polish society.
