Holocaust

The Holocaust [English, from the Greek holokaustiks = "burnt whole"] - A term used in English to describe the extermination of European Jewry during the Second World War; other languages have also adopted it. The expression has been rejected by many Jewish scholars and theologians because of its religious context, who prefer to use the Hebrew word Shoa [see Extermination] instead.
