Halacha
[from the Hebrew halach = to go, to
progress] - Religious laws in the Talmud that regulate Jewish behavior.
They are a summary of oral law, which is the accepted interpretation of
the law contained in the Torah. For Jews, halacha represents religious
norms, the infringement of which is a sin. The interpretations of the
halacha written in the Talmud were developed over the centuries in the
literature of the rabbinical responses, which were treated as legal
precedents, as well as in the Talmudic commentaries and the Shulchan
Aruch.
